The new year can be a motivating reminder for some self reflection and evaluation. This type of thought processcanturninto effective goal setting, positive change and successful planning for the year ahead.
One of the most popular New Year’s resolutions is career advancement. With this in mind, I’d like to share three must-have qualities you needto landyour promotion.
1. Have Passion: “Love What You Do and You'll Never Work a Day in Your Life”
Passion creates some of the very best employees. Learning to love what you do and having pride for your organization is one wayto truly excel in the workplace. When people love what they do, work changes from just “work”into achievement, purpose and accomplishment.
If you don’t have your dream job yet, take some time to evaluate what you really want. Would advancement in your company give you more passion? Does your company culture fit your personality? Do you enjoy your coworkers and team members? If you answered, “no”, this is a great time to re-evaluate where you are and what changes you want to make. If you answered, “yes”, to any of these questions, use that motivation tostart loving what you do. Once you truly love your job, you will naturally become a valued and talented employee.
2. Be Selfless:It’s Not All About You
In order to succeed, in any profession, you need to understand the balance between skills andpassion. Instead of putting your entire focus on how well you can perform, worry more about how you can inspire, upliftand help others achieve. Be mindful of how to use your unique qualities to lead those around youso they can better themselves and find ways to enable their full potential. Remember, its not all about you, even when you are working towards a promotion.
3. Be Disruptive: Think Outside the Box
Being a disruptor takes forward thinking, guts and discipline. This may sound contradictory with the above stepbut they actually go hand in hand.A good example of a disruptor who gained his success through uplifting others is Oakland A’s GM, Billy Beane. We had the pleasure of hearing Beane speak at HireVue’s annual Digital Disruption conference last June. When he was hired on as the A's GM, he didn’t set out to be better than everyone else. He looked at baseball in a completely different way and used the importance of analytics to gain insight into various players and their unique skills. Being disruptive takes an entire team and can only be accomplished when others can see your vision.
So, if you're looking for career advancement this year, remember these three steps:have passion, be selflessand get disruptive. You'll be getting that promotion in no time.
