Making a Difference Through Digital Interviewing

Over the last 20 years of my career I have had the privilege of working with some of the most amazing companies in the world, with various missions of their own. Each one has facilitated, produced and directed all kinds of cool initiatives designed to benefit thousands of employees and customers. Recently, a colleague asked me how I discovered the career path I followed. I smiled to myself and pondered a response, wondering whether I’d chosen my career path or it chose me.

My career path actually started on the day I was born. My entry into the world was unique to many because I was born into a local Tribe whose custom was to pray to the Shark Gods in honor of my birth. The Chieftain, in full ceremonial garb, came to the hospital to see my parents. He informed them that it was their duty to guide me toward a life of contribution and they took this quite seriously. At the age of ten, an adult asked me what I wanted to do when I grew up and I instinctively told him that I wanted to make a difference in the world. A few decades later I realize that every decision I have made in my career has been focused on making a positive difference in the lives of the individuals and organizations with whom I have worked.

I could attribute this journey to the Shark Gods, or perhaps to the fact that I grew up in a home with parents who were committed to public service and volunteerism, or maybe it was even happenstance. Regardless, I consider every day an opportunity to be a philanthropist by vocation. After all, philanthropy, in large part, is all about “nourishing, developing, and enhancing what it is to be human."  True, I get paid to do my job, but what motivates me daily is the part about making a difference each and every day.
