People don’t buy what you do, they buy why you do it. They don’t buy WHAT you do. They buy WHY you do it. This is Simon Sinek’s simple message in one of the most watched TED Talks titled “How great leaders inspire action.” Beyond the role of sales or leadership I think his message is relevant to how organizations leverage company culture in their recruiting strategy. The goal is not to just hire people who need a job. The goal is to hire people who believe what you believe. People who fundamentally understand WHY the organization works the way it does. This may be what differentiates an average hire who has all the skills, capabilities and experience needed to perform a job from the great hire who “just gets it.” I had the opportunity to travel with Sodavy Sok this week while pondering her ExpertVue video and together we heard firsthand again how incredibly important the role of culture can be in an organization’s recruitment strategy. Meeting with one of the largest technology companies in the world, and arguably one of the most attractive employment brands in the space, we heard that despite the incredibly cool products the company builds and enables, they struggle, like most organizations in today’s tightening labor market, to attract the right candidates. They can find people who need a job. They can find people who can do the job. But they are challenged to find the people who get it. The truly great talent. As Sodavy notes in today’s ExpertVue, HireVue enables organizations to reflect their culture throughout the interview process in a way that was never possible before. It is one of the tools that HireVue provides to create that competitive differentiator for organizations throughout the process of attracting, validating, hiring and on boarding talent. HireVue and the branding tools we make available like interview opening and closing videos and branded and customized messaging enable organizations to ensure that candidates hear not just What you do and How you do it but WHY. At HireVue we believe that everyone has a story to tell. We enable those stories to be heard in way that is contextually relevant to an organization. We provide branding and messaging tools and expertise that enable organizations to share their story and beliefs with candidates to attract the talent that “just get it”.
