Imagine the recruiting challenges facing a 325 year old retailer with stores across northern remote Canada and Alaska, accessible mainly by snowmobile. It’s not just tricky travel and logistical details that pose challenges, but The North West Company also needs to ensure a solid cultural and lifestyle fit for the communities it serves, and the people it recruits. It’s a tricky balance to strike, making sourcing, screening, and hiring the best talent both an artful science, and one that needs technology to help standardize, speed and personalize the sourcing and recruitment process.

The North West Company turned to digital interviewing to help reinvent and modernize recruiting, and staff its retail locations with high caliber talent, while ensuring the best personal and cultural fit for its employees. The North West Company, the 2nd oldest retailer in the world, has a rich enterprising legacy tracing its roots back to 1668.

With annual sales surpassing $1B, the company operates three divisions – Canadian Sales and Operations which operates nearly 165 stores across Canada that includes Northern Canada, Alaska Commercial Company (ACC) that operates a chain of stores in Rural Alaska, and Cost-U-Less, operating across the Caribbean and South Pacific

The North West Company uses HireVue On Demand Digital Interviews which allow recruiters to send a link to a candidate to complete an interview from their computer or mobile device – anywhere, anytime. Candidates aren’t taking time off work or traveling to locations to interview, making digital interviewing much more convenient. Recruiters and hiring managers then review completed interviews with the same ease and access – anywhere, anytime. They collaborate, rate, and share candidates across teams, geographies, store locations, and time zones.

The North West Company reports that they now advertise open positions across multiple channels and job boards in all regions. HireVue eliminated the time, travel, and

logistical barriers that previously existed, giving them a much broader candidate reach.

Prior to HireVue, the team would have to segment the candidate population for regional events, run ads, and do a lot of direct, local outreach and marketing, which meant high recruiting costs.

“HireVue has completely reinvented and modernized the way we recruit talent across our business, and extended our reach well beyond what we were able to do using traditional methods,” said Mader.

Mader commented, “With HireVue, we can run consecutive ads and recruiting campaigns across the region, allowing interested candidates to interview any time they see a job opening or opportunity. This has given us a much better, continual flow of candidates and a healthy pipeline of future talent from which to recruit – something we didn’t have before.”

The Results

Cost Per Hire Reduced 22%

The North West Company began using HireVue in its Northern Canada Retail and Giant Tiger divisions in August 2012. In the 6-month period ending January 31, 2013, the cost per hire in this area was reduced by 22% from the previous six months.

50% Reduction in Time to Hire

“One of our main business drivers for digital interviewing was the need to reduce our time to hire,” said Mader. “What used to be a six to eight week recruiting process has been dramatically cut to just three or four weeks with HireVue. We’re able to get great candidates in front of hiring managers within two or three days of application, which has really improved manager satisfaction and helped speed the entire recruitment process.” The company reports that this has had a big impact on overall productivity as well, since managers are returned to their “day jobs” much faster and not wasting time at recruiting events or spending time with the wrong candidates.

3x Candidate Volume

“Compared to the same period last year, HireVue helped us triple the amount of candidates we put through our pipeline, since candidates, recruiters and managers can access interviews anywhere, anytime – essentially place-shifting and time-shifting the entire recruiting process. This is absolutely critical to our success, since we need high volume in order to find the best talent that also meets our unique and specific cultural requirements,” said Mader.

The North West Company also reports that HireVue has helped them triple their candidate pipeline without adding resources. “We are successfully managing this new workflow and getting three times the amount of candidates in our pipeline than before. The more candidates we can get in our pipe, the better chance we have of finding the right person. It’s a digital talent pool at our fingertips, which has been invaluable,” said Mader

Improved Candidate Experience & Employment Branding

Digital interviews give candidates the chance to bring their resumes to life and add personalized context to their story. O’Donnell commented, “HireVue digital interviews give us a better sense of who a candidate is as a person, and allow us to drill down on cultural fit – much more than just words on a resume. The ability for a candidate to explain more about themselves and their background through a digital interview is one of the things that sets us apart from other companies – it’s much more personal and allows us to get to know candidates on a deeper level.”

The company also reports that digital interviewing is more respectful of a candidate’s time since candidates no longer need to travel to attend an all-day hiring event, only to be possibly told they aren’t a good fit. “Candidates have commented that they like the process and are appreciative of the respect for their time. We have a very diverse candidate pool – of all ages – and they have all embraced digital interviewing.”

Better Collaboration Across Hiring Teams; Managers Rave

Prior to HireVue, The North West Company would hand write notes from recruiting events, which were subject to tired managers and recruiters who spent a day meeting back to back candidates. With HireVue, they now have access to candidate interviews and notes at their fingertips and can easily share qualified candidates with managers quickly. When positions become available, recruiters can go into the HireVue system, review prior candidate interviews, see where there might be a fit, and get them to managers quickly, regardless of store location. Mader said, “What also is great about this level of collaboration, is that no matter who leaves the company, or transfers to other departments, our recruiting history, candidates and related notes, are still there in the HireVue system. This type of continuity is critical to our business.”
