Customer Facing Roles Require More Candidate Insight

Vodafone Group is one of the world’s leading telecommunications groups, with a significant presence in Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia Pacific. In the UK - Vodafone’s “home turf” - they operate over 500 retail stores where customer experience is at heart of every interaction.

Ali Ross-Grant, Senior Resourcing Manager, explained why traditional ways of bringing in talent couldn’t meet their needs. “Our retail positions are customer facing roles and it’s essential to be able to gauge their excitement and behavior,” said Ross-Grant. “With typical applications and phone screenings, you have no ability to see how they’ll be interacting with customers. We also took too much time and interviewed too many candidates before making a hire,” she concluded.

As a result of implementing HireVue, Vodafone was able to take their time to hire from 23 days to 11 days; a 52% decrease in time to fill. In addition their final interview to hire conversion rate, which averaged 4:1 before Hirevue, dropped significantly to 2.5:1. And because OnDemand interviews were allowing hiring managers to better know the candidate early in the process, Vodafone was able to cut their traditional assessment provider from the process completely. “Between eliminating our assessment provider for retail roles as well as saving on staff due to the efficiencies of the system, we’ve been able to triple our cost savings” explains Ross-Grant.

Vodafone is also one of the biggest employers of youth from apprentice schemes, to internships, work experience and graduate programs. Catalina Schveninger, Global Head of Resourcing at Vodafone recognized the challenge of identifying the best graduate talent among a large pool of candidates. “We decided to build on the UK retail experience with HireVue and worked with them to design a new end to end grads experience, embedding psychometric assessments into the video interview platform for a unified, world class candidate experience.” As a result of this change, Vodafone has seen a 30% decrease in dropout rates.
