HireVue Accelerate’s Pete Abilla and Gabe Villamizar caught up with 6 executives and asked them the question

What Does Taylor Swift mean when she says
“Darling, I'm a nightmare dressed like a daydream?”

Here are their answers.

On April 9th Taylor announced that her mom has cancer. We created this infographic well before that announcement. Our prayers and thoughts go out to her and her mom. #prayformamaswift

You're looking at it. I have personified that statement for many, many years—only no one had articulated it quite that well. What she's saying is, "This is what my package on the outside looks like, but on the inside I'm hell on wheels, I'm going to be more than you can handle, and you better get ready."

you might think she's pretty and she's gifted in her music, but once you really get to know the real Taylor and what her interests are really centered on, she could be a nightmare

That's a great question. She's probably saying that you can't judge a book by its cover because you never know what you're getting. So you might think she's pretty and she's gifted in her music, but once you really get to know the real Taylor and what her interests are really centered on, she could be a nightmare

That's awesome. I do not know the mind of Taylor Swift, but she is definitely one of the best marketers that I have seen in the music industry. And she's captivating the attention of millions and millions of people. For me it just means that what's underneath might be a little different than what you see.
... it just means that what's underneath might be a little different than what you see . . .

I know nothing about Taylor Swift

That is probably the most off the wall question I've ever been asked. She's dressed like a nightmare, I think rightly so. My sons love Taylor Swift, so I can't say anything bad about her. I know nothing about Taylor Swift.
... get behind that veneer, "I'm a complete hot mess. I'm a nightmare. It's not pleasant, it's not easy."
I think what it's suggesting is the idea of a veneer. She's saying, "I look clean and lovely and easy on the eyes, and it's a total daydream." But if you get behind that veneer, "I'm a complete hot mess. I'm a nightmare. It's not pleasant, it's not easy."

... might be able to convince somebody to buy ...but you're going to have a really unhappy customer
She is saying I'm not what I appear to be. That’s especially true if you are in the dating world. You might think that “this is the one” just by the physical appearance, but inside is a world of turmoil. I would say "dressed like a daydream" is somebody trying to sell a product that doesn't quite have real value inside. They're going to fail miserably over time. They might win short-term…they might win sales…they might be able to convince somebody to buy…but they're going to have a really unhappy customer.
