Captain Scott Kelly

History-Making U.S. Astronaut & Retired U.S. Navy Captain

Captain Scott Kelly’s epic Year In Space, now a New York Times best-selling book, solidified his status as one of the greatest pioneers in history. In his acclaimed speech appearances, he now brings audiences to the edge of their seats with transcendent insights that inspire and challenge them to dream big, test the status quo, and “choose to do the hard things.”

One of a select group of Americans who embody a defining moment in the nation’s history, he captivated the world and seized the imagination of millions during his record-breaking voyage—proving that the sky is not the limit when it comes to the potential of the human spirit. On his trip, Scott, together with his identical twin brother Mark on Earth, paved the way for the future of space travel and exploration as the subjects of an unprecedented NASA study on how space affects the human body.

Released in October 2017, Scott’s New York Times best-selling memoir, “Endurance: My Year In Space and Our Journey to Mars,” is now available everywhere and has been optioned as a Hollywood film by Sony Pictures.

With awe-inspiring stories from space and personal reflections on leadership, teamwork and testing limits, Scott inspires others to believe that they can reach any goal, no matter how ambitious or audacious. As he looks back on the expedition that shuttled him into history books, audiences revel in the presence of a true American hero and gather unique takeaways on persistence, resilience and self-determination that transform the way they view their own journey through life.

IKEA

I started my career sorting potatoes in a grocery store when I was 12 years old. Since many years my focus has moved from root-crop to people.

I strongly believe in people’s wisdom to make their own choices for themselves and for the company they work for, if we allow them to do so. I’ve moved from recruiting co-workers to developing them and today my team and I lead the development of concept, processes and solutions in the area of recruitment for IKEA globally. One of our main focuses right now is candidate experience, the impact it has on our brand and how we can continue being an attractive company.

I’m a father to two beautiful girls, a certified coach and a horse person who hopes to own one of my own someday.

CareerXroads

Gerry Crispin

Founder & Principal

CareerXroads

Gerry describes himself as a life-long student of Recruiting & Hiring. Speaker, author & thought leader, he stays grounded by engaging with an extraordinary network of friends, colleagues and practitioners every day.

Gerry actively promotes the notion that Talent Acquisition is the ‘point’ of HR- every stakeholder in the hiring process, especially candidates, must have their basic needs addressed and for recruiters to be truly proud of who they are as professionals- actively supporting a professional association that has their back is a no brainer.

Gerry and his business partner, Chris Hoyt, facilitate peer-to-peer conversations about competitive practices with 100s of TA leaders from the world’s largest and most innovative corporations. Today, the CareerXroads Colloquium is in its second decade as a member driven community of Talent Acquisition peers devoted to learning from and helping one another succeed.

In 2010, Gerry co-founded a non-profit, Talentboard, with Elaine Orler and Ed Newman to better define the Candidate Experience, a subject he has been passionate about for more than 30 years. By 2018 the 'CandEs' is firmly established and acknowledges 50 employers each year (ranking the highest by their candidates) as a 'bench' that shares current Candidate Experience competitive practices (based on more than 200k surveys.)

In 2017, the Association for Talent Acquisition Professionals was launched after years of discussion with practitioners, consultants and vendors. ATAP's Board of Directors is building a body of work to truly support recruiting as a profession.

Gerry co-authored eight books on the evolution of staffing and has written 100s of articles and whitepapers on similar topics. His career in Human Resources spans nearly 50 years and includes stints as GM at a recruitment advertising firm, HR leadership positions at Johnson and Johnson; an Associate in a boutique Executive Search firm; Career Services Director at the University where he graduated with his BE and advanced degrees in Engineering and IO/Psychology.

Gerry still sees himself as a student and keeps his perspective fresh by traveling to countries throughout the world and interviewing government officials, employers, university professors and students about how work and hiring practices are evolving. He has led delegations of CHROs and TA Leaders to a 1/2 dozen countries including Japan (2017) and Cuba (2015) with Eastern Europe next (November, 2018).

IKEA

A parent, a talent acquisition professional, a mentor, a politician in my free time, an avid traveller and currently a guru in dinosaur names thanks to my three year old! – This sums me up.

I have spent over a decade in the field of talent acquisition with companies like Citibank, Yahoo!, Ikano and IKEA. This is where my passion lies in the professional world. Recruiting talent by understanding who they are, what drives them, why they do what they do and their lessons learnt through life - has filled my days with so many interesting & inspirational stories. For the past two years I’ve been with IKEA’s Global Recruitment team, looking primarily into concepts, processes and solutions for thirty one countries - with the intention to make our recruiters life’s easier, improve candidate experience and keep up with all the digitalization taking place within this space!

When I’m not working, I’m learning and developing as a new parent, spending as much time as possible with my son. I’m also engaged in mentoring new immigrants, hold a seat in my municipality’s “children and education” council, and travel on every chance I get. I’m born in India, but have spent large parts of my life in Sri Lanka, Kenya, US & most recently Sweden.

Mattress Firm

As a contributor to the Talent Acquisition space for 8+ years, I have had the unique opportunity to explore several facets of Talent Acquisition. After joining the Mattress Firm Talent Acquisition team in April of 2012, I began directly assisting in our ongoing acquisition initiatives, focusing largely on the new team member transition experience while efficiently eliminating administrative obstacles of the team.

In May of 2014, I transitioned into a role focusing on our collegiate recruiting and internship programs due to my previous experience in higher education. After two years in this role, I took on my next and current role, overseeing our Talent Branding + Technology initiatives.

To date, I have played an integral role in the large-scale implementation of our Human Capital Management System/ATS and most recently, the HireVue system. Today, I continue to support the organization in areas such as employer branding, recruitment marketing and recruitment technology. I am so happy to be sharing more about Mattress Firm’s HireVue journey at Horizon!
